About This Vacuum
Sensors do a lot of the work on the Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV (LA802). The DuoClean Detect head has two brushrolls and four sensors, and Shark says it boosts suction and brush speed when it finds embedded dirt or hair. Each sensor has a job. Edge Detect turns suction up within 2 inches of a wall. Floor Detect uses an ultrasonic sensor to tell carpet from hard floor and change suction and brush speed to match. Direction Detect lets it pick up debris going backward as well as forward. It's a bagless corded upright that weighs 15 lb, with a HEPA filter and what Shark calls Odor Neutralizer Technology inside. At 15 lb it's a full-size upright, and that's the cost. You'll feel it on stairs. We also don't have a cord length or dust cup size, so we can't tell you how far it reaches from one outlet or how often it needs emptying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Suction is strong on carpet and hard floor alike, pulling up fine dust, sand and a lot of dog hair, and the hair doesn't wrap the roller. The LA802 uses a DuoClean Detect head with two brushrolls, so you don't swap heads when you move between floor types.
Mostly, yes. Floor Detect uses an ultrasonic sensor to tell carpet from hard floor and changes suction and brush speed to match, and that works for most homes. It isn't flawless: in one case the dirt boost got stuck on, and another person switched to manual because it struggles to adjust.
Heavier than expected. It weighs 15 lb, though it's still easy to steer and carry. On stairs, lifting off the canister helps a lot, since you're carrying only the pod and hose instead of hauling the whole upright up step by step.
The cord is the sore point. There's no auto-rewind, it slips off the hook on the wand, and it can catch under the dust cup when the LA802 is parked. It doesn't hurt the cleaning, but it's a daily irritation and the complaint that keeps coming up.
Yes. Edge Detect raises suction when the head gets near a wall, and it cleans close to walls and baseboards without a separate tool. The headlights on the LA802 also help you spot crumbs and hair on hard floors before you run over them.
Yes, it's a bagless upright with a HEPA filter, so there are no bags to buy.
